Real Estate In East Rogers Park
East Rogers Park is the lake side area of Rogers Park - from Devon north to Evanston (Howard Street) and from the lake west to roughly Western Avenue. It sits on Lake Michigan within a short commuting distance of downtown Chicago.
Despite the wonderful architecture and perfect location, homebuyers haven’t always invested here due to high crime rates and too few conveniences. But in the 1990’s things began to change. Now, many of Rogers Park's vintage buildings have been fixed up, new businesses have opened, and the city is heading up the $60 million Gateway Plaza development near one of the neighborhood's "el" stops. Real estate prices, as to be expected, are rising fast.
Low and mixed-income high-rises tower along Hollywood Boulevard, where Lake Shore becomes Sheridan Road. Large courtyard buildings prevail near Sheridan Road. A high-rise construction ban exists from Sheridan Road east to the lake. Subsequently there has been an rehab boom. There are also many vintage apartment buildings and as you go farther west towards West Rogers Park, lots of large, old homes.
Rogers Park offers everything from Indian, Pakistani, Russian and Orthodox Jewish markets and restaurants along Devon Avenue to art and coffee houses on Sheridan Road. Closer to the lake at Clark and Lunt you will find a lively hispanic community with a largely Mexican population. Some alternative theater, health food restaurants and cinema make this a great place to live. The diversity of the residents goes beyond the melting pot.
Rogers Park is the only Chicago community with direct access to the lake. In this neighborhood the buildings are right next to the beach. The rest of the lakefront in the city is cut off by Lake Shore Drive, but in Rogers Park, the beaches are there are right at the end of the block.
Rogers Park is also home to Loyola University's Lake Shore campus. More than 10,000 students live here during the academic year, among the immigrants from Asia and Latin American and Russia.
The Bach House is located in Rogers Park and was designated a Chicago Landmark in1977. It is one of the last Frank Lloyd Wright's designs for a small urban house. Driving by, you can see that the entrance is almost hidden from Sheridan Road--ensuring the privacy of its residents.
