Edgewater is a Chicago community of 62,000 people in an area bounded by the Lake, Foster, Ravenswood and Devon. Edgewater encompasses the neighborhoods of Edgewater Glen, Epic and Lakewood Balmoral. Andersonville is a smaller neighborhood within Edgewater, which has been heavily influenced by Scandinavian culture.

The earliest Edgewater residences were small, modest farm homes and workmen’s cottages. After World War I, Edgewater began to boom as Swedish, German, and Irish settlers moved into the area and more single-family homes were built. Native Americans came to Chicago in large numbers as a result of federal relocation programs and eventually congregated in the city's Uptown and Edgewater neighborhoods. Edgewater has a large variety of housing options- both.in terms of the quality and type of housing. Edgewater's main street is Sheridan Road, where there are many apartment buildings with views of the city and the lake. The neighborhood has high-rises along Sheridan Road, mid- century courtyard buildings along the Winthrop-Kenmore corridor, west of Broadway. East of Broadway is dominated with high-rise hotels and apartments offering great views and private beaches. Newer high-rise apartments, condominiums and townhouses are available along Sheridan Road and Lake Shore Drive. Overall, as you move west, away from the lake, there are more 2,3 and 6-flat brownstones.

Edgewater is quickly becoming a very popular place for the gay crowd. Hollywood Beach, the most popular gay beach in Chicago, is in Edgewater. The neighborhood beach has a fishing pier and walking paths. The area has recently started to come alive with new shops, restaurants and condo developments. The affordability, livability, easy access to the lake and public transportation are attracting new buyers and renters to Edgewater, and that's boosting prices. Although the area is getting more expensive, you can still find some great places.

The biggest impact on Edgewater will result from potential plans to extend Lincoln Park with landfill 2.3 miles north from Hollywood Avenue to the Evanston border.
